Which is best for you? | The College Football Playoff rankings
Fox Sports has compiled its 2018 College Football playoff rankings based on the consensus opinion of the nation’s most respected experts, with a focus on players’ statistical skills, athleticism, team chemistry, physicality, and mental toughness.
Here are the full rankings:1.
Texas A&M: The Aggies’ record-setting offense, which features Heisman winner Johnny Manziel, has already put up record-breaking numbers in 2018.
However, the offense’s shortcomings on defense have contributed to its poor ranking.
A&M has only four first-team All-Americans on defense, and its ranking on this list doesn’t reflect those players.2.
Clemson: Despite dominating at quarterback for the Tigers, Clemson’s offense is still one of the weakest in the SEC.
The Tigers are the worst in the conference with only 10 first-place votes in the Football Bowl Subdivision, and they’re one of five teams with only three first- or second-team all-conference selections.
Clemson is ranked in the bottom 10 in several offensive categories, including rushing yards per game (14.8), total offense (227.5), passing yards per play (11.3), passing touchdowns per game (-2.6), and total offense score (8.7).3.
LSU: The Tigers have a very impressive record, but their defense is inconsistent.
LSU’s ranking on the All-SEC first- and second-teams is below average, and it’s a major reason why the Tigers are ranked last in the FBS in passing yards allowed (288.3) and third-worst in yards per carry (7.1).
The Tigers rank 22nd in total defense (309.3 yards per contest), and the Tigers ranked 28th in scoring defense (19.4 points per game).4.
South Carolina: The Gamecocks are the best team in the country.
The Gamecock offense has been outstanding over the past few years, but the defense is lacking a certain type of player who can generate pressure.
South Carters defensive rankings are in the top 10, but they are still ranking just 25th in the league in total offense and pass defense.5.
Auburn: The Auburn defense was a huge part of its first-year success.
The defensive improvement over the years has helped Auburn rank in the Top 25 in many categories, and the defense was ranked in last place in both rushing yards allowed per game and total defense.
The defense ranked 18th in pass defense and 26th in total defensive efficiency.
Auburn’s offense ranks eighth in passing touchdowns (3,928), but the Tigers’ defense ranks 27th in yards allowed, allowing the most yards per attempt in the nation.6.
Oklahoma: The Sooners are the first team in league history to have six consecutive wins in the Cotton Bowl.
The Soonos are ranked first in scoring offense (22.8 points per contest) and total points scored (14,821), but they rank 31st in scoring (847.4) and 32nd in yards (1,938.8).
The Soonies have a great defense, but Oklahoma ranks 22nd nationally in scoring, allowing just 17.9 points per possession.7.
LSU (10-2): LSU is a great team with a solid offense, but it has struggled to consistently score points and create turnovers.
The LSU offense ranks 21st in total offensive efficiency (25.4), and LSU’s defense ranks 30th in rushing defense (109.3).
LSU’s offense ranked 28nd in passing offense and 30th overall, but LSU’s pass defense ranked 28 the most in the division.8.
TCU: The Horned Frogs have one of those teams where a lot of people expect the defense to improve, but TCU is still ranked last overall in rushing offense (16.2 points per attempt) and second in scoring at 10.5 points per play.
The Hornet’s defense is the best in the Big 12, ranking sixth in scoring and eighth in yards.9.
West Virginia: The Mountaineers are a very solid team with some of the best athletes in the world.
The Mounties rank 20th nationally in rushing, but West Virginia ranks 22 at the running back position, with just two first-round picks.
The offense ranks fourth in passing, and West Virginia is ranked 22nd overall in scoring.10.
Texas Tech: The Red Raiders have been one of college football’s best teams over the last few years.
The Red Raider defense ranks 25th nationally, and their offense ranks 27 at the wide receiver position.
The Tech offense ranks 14th at the quarterback position, and Tech’s defense ranked 32nd overall.11.
Arizona State: The Sun Devils have had a lot to prove over the next two seasons.
They rank 30th nationally at the position and 31st overall in passing.
The Sun Devil offense ranks 13th in passing and 18th overall in total yards
