Catalunya’s first internet cafe opens in Barcelona
Catalan lawmakers have voted in favour of a plan to build a new internet cafe in Barcelona.
The proposal to build the cafe on the site of a former radio station was put to the Catalan parliament in December.
A referendum on the proposal was called for this month, and the Catalan government says it hopes to get the necessary votes from the Catalan people.
It was first mooted in April, but the proposal has not been officially put forward until now.
The new internet café is being built in a renovated and modernised office block in the centre of the city.
The Catalan government said the cafe would offer a range of services, including a chat room, social media, digital video and a library.
The building has been a temporary venue for the city’s mayor for more than a decade.
The project has been put on hold as the Catalan Parliament is expected to take up the proposal again on Monday.
